My Super Sunday

I caught up on my sleep on Sunday morning, and decided to join the WHU students for some rowing on the Moselle River. The Moselle has a much slower current than the Rhine, and it weaves through some vineyards and smaller German cities. We took out a four man crew boat. I’ve used the rowing machines at the gym, so I had the basic motion, but actually twisting the oars in and out of the water and matching the pace of the other guys was more challenging than I expected. After a few hours everyone was exhausted and we took the boat back to the dock.

The super bowl started at 12:30 at night, and about 20 people met to watch it at the Karova bar. I wasn’t surprised that commentary was in German. It did surprise me that Boris Becker was one of the two announcers. Also, the game was shown uninterrupted, with no commercials. So they replayed game highlights during the TV timeouts.

As one of the few Americans, I was the football expert. I diligently explained the pros and cons of blitzing a weak-side corner when you're in third and long situations. None of the Germans were rude enough to point out that my explanations rarely matched those of the German announcers. What does Becker know about football anyway? :-)

I only made it until 3:30am, but the first half was an exciting and memorable Superbowl.
Congratulations Indianapolis!

Thank you Football for Dummies! There are actually people going to grief counseling around here because the bears lost. Seriously, I saw it on the news. I was indifferent, either way it was a win for me, but still, it would have been fun to see the city go ape sh*t. On the other hand, the constant over usage of the tag line "BEAR DOWN" by EVERYONE was getting a little annoying. Cool you watched the game though!
